Castle Rock has one of the more challenging geological profiles for pools on the Front Range, and it is not just because of the bentonite clay. The community is built on top of, and partially into, Castle Rock conglomerate. A rocky bedrock formation that gave the town its name and its iconic central butte.

What that means: many Castle Rock pools sit on expansive bentonite clay above hard conglomerate bedrock. The clay above is trying to expand and contract through seasonal moisture cycles. The bedrock below is not going anywhere. How Castle Rock Geology Affects Pool Leaks

The bentonite layer

Same Douglas County clay that creates problems in Highlands Ranch, Parker, and Lone Tree. Swells up to 15 times its dry volume when wet. Shrinks dramatically when dry. Drives ground movement throughout the year.

The conglomerate layer

Hard, irregular bedrock made up of cemented gravel, sand, and cobblestones. Sits beneath the clay in much of Castle Rock. Provides a rigid base that does not flex with soil movement.

The transition zone

The interface between flexible bentonite above and rigid conglomerate below is where most Castle Rock pool damage originates. The pool structure is essentially anchored on rock from below while being pushed and pulled from the sides and above. The differential stress this creates is brutal on plumbing connections, shell seams, and deck attachments.
